Everything you say about it is absolutely true and extremely important and valid. I urge everyone to be careful about the term free speech in general. The free speech dialogue was chosen as a cover by the universities for failing to enforce policies and procedures to protect people within their institutions. When we focus on free speech, we get drawn into a narrative that is challenging and we move away from the fact that what is happening goes far beyond speech. People are being physically assaulted and acts of vandalism are being committed and there are no prosecutions that I can find. As long as felonies get lost under the cry of "free speech" all of us are in physical danger. Look at what happened to Governor Josh Shapiro's residence and the lack of outrage, except from a very very few public officials.
I completely agree with your observation. It’s surprising how some people assumed I was attacking free speech, even though I clearly stated that it’s one of humanity’s most essential values. I simply pointed out that there are boundaries—moments when free speech transforms into something else and ceases to be what it claims to be. And by the way, I highlighted those very points in the piece as well.
I did not, for one second, think you were attacking free speech. I was cautioning against the fact that sometimes I think just using the term gives the nonsense power. I think of it like -- "there is no bad PR". I apologize if I was not clear.
Just to clarify—your comment here was absolutely clear and spot on. I was referring to some of the reactions I received to the same post on X. Most likely, I didn’t provide enough detail there, so that’s on me.
